No I’m not joking, the internet is literally getting an update today. If everything goes well you shouldn’t notice a thing. But still, behind the scenes something will be very different.

As you know by now (since you are a frequent reader of this blog… *ahem*) we all have an IP address on the internet. This is the virtual location of our computer, router, server, whatever. This address is unique throughout the web.
And IP address always has 4 numbers separated by a dot. So for example This type of address allows a combination of about 4 billion addresses. And guess what… we’ve ran out…

We are in daring need of a lot more addresses so the interwebz will be changing to IPv6 today. This address has 6 numbers instead of 4 and provides a virtually unlimited amount of addresses. What changes for you? Not much really, this change…
